About The Dark Hedges in Fog, County Antrim

The Dark Hedges is an avenue of old beech trees along Bregagh Road in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The Stuart family planted about 150 of them around 1775 to impress visitors arriving at their house, Gracehill. Over two centuries the branches have grown into each other and formed a twisting tunnel over the road, and local stories tell of a grey lady who walks along it at dusk. Fewer than a hundred trees remain, and since 2017 cars have not been allowed on the road. In this photo the gnarled trunks disappear into thick fog.

Puzzle tip: the dark trunks on both sides are the place to begin; the grey fog in the middle comes last.
