About Celtic Crosses in St Cuthbert's Kirkyard below Edinburgh Castle

St Cuthbert's Kirkyard lies in a hollow below the rock of Edinburgh Castle, at the west end of Princes Street Gardens. Christians are thought to have worshipped on this spot for well over a thousand years, and the graveyard is one of the oldest in the city. In the early 19th century Edinburgh's medical schools needed bodies for study, and grave robbers dug up the newly buried, so in 1827 a watchtower was built at the corner of the kirkyard for guards to watch over the graves at night. In this photo weathered Celtic crosses stand below the castle under a stormy sky.

Puzzle tip: the tall stone cross in front and the castle are good places to start; the grass and the sky come last.
