About Almannagjá Gorge below the Law Rock, Þingvellir

In the year 930 the Norse settlers of Iceland met at Þingvellir to found the Althing, an open-air assembly that is often called one of the oldest parliaments in the world. Every summer chieftains and farmers rode here from all over the island, and from the Law Rock, the Lögberg, the lawspeaker recited the laws aloud. The site lies in a rift valley where the North American and Eurasian plates are slowly pulling apart, and the cliff of the Almannagjá gorge is the edge of the American plate. This photo follows the path through the gorge between the dark rock walls.

Puzzle tip: start with the path and the green grass, then the tall dark rock walls on both sides and the cloudy sky.
