About Idanre Hills, Ondo State

The Idanre Hills in Ondo State are a group of steep granite domes rising above the rainforest of southwestern Nigeria. For centuries the town of Idanre stood high among them, where its people were safe from attack, and the old town on top can still be reached by a stairway of more than 600 steps. In the 20th century most people moved down to the new town in the valley, which this photo shows spread out between the bare grey hills and the green forest.

Puzzle tip: start with the bare grey rock faces, then the green forest on the slopes, and fill in the town in the valley last.
