About Ancient Walls of Kano

Kano in northern Nigeria has been a great Hausa trading city for about a thousand years, where caravans from across the Sahara met traders from the south. From the 11th century on, its rulers surrounded the city with thick walls of sun-dried earth, later extended to a ring many kilometres long with gates that were closed at night. Only parts of the walls survive today, worn by centuries of rain. This photo shows one of the old sections, its ochre earth carved into ridges and folds.

Puzzle tip: start with the blue sky and the green plants on top, then the ridges of the ochre wall, and the sandy ground last.
