About Old Walls of Ouadane

Ouadane, on the edge of the Adrar plateau in Mauritania, was founded in the 12th century and became a rich caravan town, trading salt, gold and dates across the Sahara. At the end of the 15th century the Portuguese even set up a trading post here. As the caravan trade faded the old town was slowly abandoned, and today its stone houses and walls climb the hillside in ruins above an oasis of date palms. Ouadane is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This photo shows the old stone walls under the Mauritanian flag.

Puzzle tip: start with the stone walls and their textures, then the flag and the flat desert, and the pale sky last.
