About Serra da Leba Pass

The road over the Serra da Leba in southern Angola is one of the most famous mountain roads in Africa. Built by the Portuguese in the 1970s, it climbs about 1,000 metres in a tight series of hairpin bends, linking the hot coastal desert around Namibe with the cool plateau of Huíla and its capital, Lubango. A viewpoint at the top looks straight down on the zigzag road, a view that appears on many postcards. This photo shows the road winding up the steep, green mountainside.

Puzzle tip: start with the grey road and its bends, then the green and brown slopes, and the sky and the far hills last.
