About Welwitschia in the Namib Desert, Namibe

Welwitschia is one of the strangest plants in the world, found only in the Namib Desert of southern Angola and Namibia. It grows just two leaves in its whole life, which keep growing from the base and split into long, twisted ribbons lying on the sand. Some plants are thought to be more than 1,000 years old, and they get much of their water from the fog that rolls in from the Atlantic. The plant is named after the Austrian botanist Friedrich Welwitsch, who studied it in Angola. This photo shows a welwitschia on the flat gravel desert.

Puzzle tip: start with the green and brown leaves of the plant, then the gravel desert around it, and the horizon and the sky last.
