About Wakhan Valley along the Panj River

The Wakhan Valley runs along the Panj River in the far south of the Pamirs, where the river forms the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Across the water rise the snowy peaks of the Hindu Kush in Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor, a thin strip of land that reaches all the way to China. For centuries Silk Road travellers passed through here, and the valley is dotted with ruined fortresses, such as Yamchun, and a Buddhist stupa at Vrang. The Wakhi villages grow wheat and apricots on green terraces between the dry slopes.

Puzzle tip: the river and the green fields are a clear guide through the middle; the dry slopes and the peaks come last.
