About Mountain Lake in Sughd Province

Sughd Province in northern Tajikistan takes its name from Sogdiana, the land of the Sogdians, who were the great traders of the Silk Road between the 4th and 8th centuries. Its south is filled with the high Zarafshan and Turkestan ranges, where rivers fed by snow and glaciers run through deep valleys and collect in mountain lakes. In the Yaghnob valley nearby, a few villages still speak Yaghnobi, a language descended from Sogdian. In this photo, a calm lake lies below rugged peaks, with a stream running in from the valley.

Puzzle tip: the water and the shore have the clearest edges; the steep slopes and the peaks come next.
