About Lake Elimé at Ounianga Sérir

At Ounianga Sérir, in northern Chad, a row of long, narrow lakes lies between sand dunes, separated from one another by ridges of sand and reeds. Lake Elimé is one of them, its deep blue water a startling sight in the yellow Sahara. Date palms grow along the shores, and the few people who live here harvest dates and gather salt. The lakes of Ounianga Sérir and Ounianga Kebir together form a UNESCO World Heritage site. This photo shows the lake with palms in front and a pale sandstone hill on the far shore.

Puzzle tip: start with the green palms in front, then the blue lake and its sandy edges, and the hill and the sky last.
