About Painted Rock Shelter at Laas Geel

The rock shelters of Laas Geel lie on a granite outcrop where two dry riverbeds meet, about 50 kilometres from Hargeisa in Somaliland, the self-declared state in the north of Somalia. Their name means the camel's well in Somali, because herders water their camels at the wells nearby. The ancient people who painted here were cattle herders, and the paintings may show ceremonies honouring their herds. Local guards protect the site day and night. This photo looks up at a painted overhang of orange granite against the sky.

Puzzle tip: start with the painted parts of the rock, then the orange granite, and the sky and the bushes last.
