About Somalia
Somali traders have sailed these coasts for thousands of years, and towns such as Mogadishu, Berbera and Zeila were rich ports long before European ships arrived. Britain ruled the north and Italy the south until 1960, when they united as Somalia. In 1991 the north declared itself independent as Somaliland, which is not internationally recognised. Most Somalis share one language and one faith, and many are camel herders.
You can put together the painted rock shelters of Laas Geel, the forest of Daallo Mountain near Erigavo, the winding road over the Sheikh pass and the Golis Mountains, Lido Beach and the city of Mogadishu by the Indian Ocean.
