About Rock Paintings of Laas Geel

Laas Geel, a group of granite rock shelters near Hargeisa in the north of Somalia, holds some of the oldest and best-preserved rock paintings in Africa. Painted between about 5,000 and 3,000 years ago, they show cattle with lyre-shaped horns and decorated necks, often with people standing before them with raised arms, in bright red, white and ochre. The paintings were only made known to the world in 2002, when a French team of archaeologists came across them. This photo shows painted cattle on the curved rock ceiling.

Puzzle tip: start with the white and red cattle, then the patterns around them, and the plain rock last.
