About Ghoubbet Bay and Devil Island

The Ghoubbet al-Kharab, the gulf of demons, is a deep, almost closed bay at the western end of the Gulf of Tadjoura in Djibouti, linked to the sea by a narrow channel with strong currents. Black volcanic cliffs surround it, and small volcanic islands, among them Devil Island, rise from its water. Local legends tell of spirits living in its depths. From October to February whale sharks gather in these waters to feed, attracting divers from around the world. This photo shows the bay with its dark islands under a hazy sky.

Puzzle tip: start with the dark islands, then the shore and the hills, and the calm water and the sky last.
