About Hawa Mahal, Jaipur

The Hawa Mahal, or Palace of Winds, was built in 1799 in Jaipur, the Pink City of Rajasthan. Its honeycomb front of pink sandstone has 953 small windows, called jharokhas, decorated with fine lattice work. They let the ladies of the royal household watch street festivals without being seen, and let cool breezes flow through the building in the desert heat.

Puzzle tip: the rows of little windows repeat, so look closely at the arches and domes on each piece.
