The Taj Mahal in Agra was built in the seventeenth century by the emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, and its white marble changes colour with the light of the day. In Delhi, the red sandstone walls of the Red Fort were the seat of the Mughal emperors.
Jaipur is known as the Pink City because its old town was painted pink in 1876 to welcome a royal visitor. There you can assemble the Hawa Mahal, a honeycomb of small windows from which royal women could watch the street, the hilltop Amber Fort and the Jal Mahal floating in a lake. In Varanasi, stone steps called ghats lead down to the sacred River Ganges.
