About Vittala Temple Ruins, Hampi

Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, which ruled much of southern India in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Travellers of the time described it as one of the largest and richest cities in the world. In 1565, after the empire lost the Battle of Talikota, the city was looted and abandoned, and its temples, palaces and markets were left among the granite boulders along the Tungabhadra River. The Vittala Temple is the finest of them, famous for a stone chariot and for pillars that ring like musical notes when tapped. Hampi has been a World Heritage Site since 1986.

Puzzle tip: start with the carved stone halls and their pillars; the dry ground and the sky go last.
