About Gateway of India, Mumbai

The Gateway of India stands on the waterfront of Mumbai, facing the harbour and the Arabian Sea. It was built to mark the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911, although when they landed only a cardboard model was ready; the arch itself was finished in 1924. Its architect, George Wittet, mixed Indian, Islamic and European forms, and the arch of yellow basalt is 26 metres high. In 1948 the last British troops to leave India marched through it to their ships. Today it is a favourite meeting place and the starting point for boats to Elephanta Island.

Puzzle tip: start with the arch and its carved towers; the clouds are the last pieces.
