About Ruins of Ancient Troy, Çanakkale

The hill of Hisarlik, near the Dardanelles in north-western Turkey, holds the ruins of Troy: at least nine cities built one on top of another, from about 3000 BC to Roman times. This is the city of Homer’s Iliad, besieged for ten years by the Greeks after the Trojan prince Paris took Helen from Sparta, and finally taken with the trick of the wooden horse. Heinrich Schliemann dug here from 1871 and found a hoard he called Priam’s Treasure, though it came from a city a thousand years older. The photo shows walls and foundations among the trees.

Puzzle tip: start with the stone walls and the square foundations; the trees come next, and the sky goes last.
