For more than 1,500 years Istanbul was the capital of great empires, first as Constantinople under the Byzantines and later under the Ottomans. Hagia Sophia, completed in AD 537, had the largest dome in the world for centuries. Facing it, the Blue Mosque, finished in 1616, is famous for its six minarets and blue tiles, and the Süleymaniye Mosque was designed by the great architect Mimar Sinan.
The stone Galata Tower, built in 1348, looks over the Golden Horn, and the little Maiden's Tower sits on an islet in the Bosphorus. In the bazaars, glowing mosaic lamps make a colourful puzzle of their own.
