About Carved Sandstone Balconies, Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer grew rich as a stop for camel caravans crossing the Thar Desert between India, Persia and Central Asia, and its merchants and rulers spent their wealth on houses of carved stone. The local yellow sandstone is soft when it is first cut, so craftsmen could carve it as finely as wood, and it hardens as it dries. Overhanging balconies called jharokhas, closed with stone screens, let the breeze into the rooms and allowed the women of the house to watch the street without being seen. The whole front of this building is covered in such carving.

Puzzle tip: start with the dark windows and the edges of the balconies; the many carved panels in the same golden stone come last.
