About The Monastery, Petra

The Monastery, or Ad Deir, is one of the largest monuments in Petra, carved into a mountainside by the Nabataeans in the 1st century AD. It is about 47 metres high and 48 metres wide. Reaching it takes a climb of around 800 rock-cut steps from the valley below, and the view from the top reaches across the mountains towards the Jordan Valley. Petra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Puzzle tip: the carved front is full of detail; the sandstone around it and the sky come last.
