About Al-Abbas Shrine, Karbala

Karbala, about 100 kilometres south-west of Baghdad, is one of the holiest cities for Shia Muslims. It holds two great shrines facing each other across a broad open square: the shrine of Imam Husayn, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, and the shrine of his half-brother al-Abbas, both killed at the Battle of Karbala in AD 680. Their golden domes and minarets are seen from far away. Millions of pilgrims come every year, especially for the gathering of Arbaeen, when many walk to the city on foot.

Puzzle tip: the golden dome and minarets are a clear start; the busy square and buildings around them take longer.
