About Bodrum Castle and Its Harbour

Bodrum stands on the site of ancient Halicarnassus, where the tomb of King Mausolus, the Mausoleum, was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Built in the 350s BC by his wife Artemisia, it was about 45 metres tall and covered with sculptures by the best Greek artists; its name gave us the word "mausoleum". Earthquakes damaged it in the Middle Ages, and the Knights of Saint John later used many of its stones to build and strengthen their castle by the harbour. In this aerial photo the castle sits on its rocky point between two bays full of yachts.

Puzzle tip: the castle walls and towers are the centre of the puzzle; the many white yachts and the hills come next.
