About Chouara Tannery, Fes

The Chouara Tannery in the medina of Fes has been working in much the same way since the 11th century. Hides are soaked in white vats of lime and pigeon droppings to soften them, then coloured in stone pits filled with natural dyes such as poppy, indigo, henna and saffron. Fes el-Bali, the old city, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Puzzle tip: each round dye pit has its own colour, which helps a lot; the walls around them come last.
