Chefchaouen, in the Rif Mountains, is famous for its houses and stairways painted in every shade of blue. In Fes, the old medina is one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world and home to the University of al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859; at the Chouara Tannery, leather is still dyed in round stone pits as it has been for centuries.
In Marrakech, lanterns glow in the covered markets, and south of the Atlas Mountains stands Aït Benhaddou, a fortified village of earth used as a setting for many films. Beyond it, camel caravans cross the golden dunes of the Sahara.
