About Fall Colours on the Smoky Mountain Ridges

The Appalachian Trail follows the crest of the Great Smoky Mountains for about 115 kilometres, crossing Clingmans Dome, at 2,025 metres the highest point in the park and in Tennessee. Autumn colour starts on these high ridges in early October and moves down the slopes over the following weeks. The park is also known for its rich wildlife: around 1,900 black bears live here, and so many kinds of salamander that it is called the salamander capital of the world. This photo shows colourful ridges under a dramatic sky.

Puzzle tip: start with the dramatic sky and the line of the ridges, then fill the slopes by their autumn colours.
