About Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag, Gobi Desert

The Flaming Cliffs, known in Mongolian as Bayanzag, rise from the Gobi Desert in the south of Mongolia. They were named by the American explorer Roy Chapman Andrews, whose expedition came here in 1922 and found the cliffs glowing orange and red in the evening light. In 1923 his team discovered nests of fossil dinosaur eggs in the soft sandstone, the first to be recognised by scientists. Fossils of Protoceratops and Velociraptor have also been found here, and the cliffs are still a famous site for palaeontologists.

Puzzle tip: the ridges of the cliffs make clear patterns; the flat desert and the sky come last.
