About Fort of Cacheu

Cacheu, on the river of the same name in the north of Guinea-Bissau, was one of the first Portuguese trading posts in West Africa, founded in 1588. Its small fort guarded the river, and for more than two centuries the town was a centre of the Atlantic slave trade; today a memorial and museum in Cacheu remember the people who were taken from here. Guinea-Bissau was a Portuguese colony until 1974, when it became independent after a long war led by Amílcar Cabral. This photo shows the white walls of the fort among trees under a blue sky.

Puzzle tip: start with the white walls of the fort, then the trees, and the ground and the sky last.
