About Great Baobab at Ndem

The baobab is the national tree of Senegal and appears on its coat of arms. With its huge, swollen trunk, which stores water for the long dry season, and its bare branches that look like roots, it is one of the most recognisable trees in Africa, and some baobabs are well over a thousand years old. Its fruit, called monkey bread, is made into a sweet and sour drink. Ndem is a village of the Baye Fall, a branch of the Mouride brotherhood, whose people have turned the dry savanna around it into gardens and craft workshops. In this photo a giant baobab stands above the sandy ground among smaller trees.

Puzzle tip: the dark trunk and the twisting branches are the place to begin; the plain blue sky comes last.
