Boats at Gorée Island, Senegal
Along the beaches of Dakar, fishermen launch long wooden canoes called pirogues, decorated with colourful patterns, flags and names. Every afternoon, the boats return with their catch to busy beach markets.
Gorée Island, a short ferry ride from Dakar, is a quiet place of colonial houses, flowers and narrow sandy lanes. It is a World Heritage Site and a memorial to the Atlantic slave trade, visited by people from all over the world who come to remember.
