About Pirogues on the River, Saint-Louis

Saint-Louis was founded by the French in 1659 on a narrow island in the mouth of the Senegal River, and it was the capital of French West Africa until 1902 and of Senegal until 1957. Its old colonial streets, linked to the mainland by the long iron Faidherbe Bridge, have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Across the river, on the strip of land facing the Atlantic, lies Guet Ndar, a crowded fishermen's quarter whose painted pirogues fill the riverbank. In this photo rows of long wooden pirogues with flags are moored in front of the houses in soft, hazy light.

Puzzle tip: the colourful pirogues in front are the place to start; the pink, hazy sky is the hardest part.
