About Great Mosque of Djenné

The Great Mosque of Djenné is the largest building in the world made of mud brick. A mosque has stood on this spot since the 13th century, and the present one was built in 1907. Its walls are studded with palm-wood sticks that hold it together and serve as a ready-made scaffold, because every year the whole town gathers in a festival to cover the walls with a fresh coat of mud. The old town of Djenné is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This photo shows the mosque above the stalls of the town market.

Puzzle tip: start with the three towers and their wooden sticks, then the long mud walls, and the market stalls and the sky last.
