About Mali
Mali was the heart of great empires. In the 14th century Mansa Musa, ruler of the Mali Empire, was famous as one of the richest men in history, and later the Songhai Empire ruled from Gao. Cities such as Timbuktu and Djenné became centres of trade and learning. France ruled the land until 1960.
You can put together the Great Mosque of Djenné, the cliff dwellings and villages of the Dogon country along the Bandiagara Escarpment, the Hand of Fatima near Hombori, the Tomb of Askia in Gao and boats on the Niger River in Bamako.
