About Green Sea Turtle on a Black Sand Beach, Hawaiʻi

Green sea turtles often haul themselves out of the water to rest and warm up in the sun on Hawaiian beaches, something they rarely do elsewhere in the world. On the Big Island they are a common sight on black sand beaches such as Punaluʻu, where the sand is made of lava broken up by the waves. By law, people must keep a respectful distance from resting turtles.

Puzzle tip: the turtle's patterned head and shell are the centre; the black sand needs patience.
