About Milford Sound Fiords

Milford Sound, or Piopiotahi, lies in Fiordland National Park on New Zealand's South Island. Though named a sound, it is really a fiord, carved by glaciers, with cliffs rising steeply out of the water to peaks such as Mitre Peak at 1,692 metres. It is one of the wettest places in New Zealand, and after heavy rain hundreds of temporary waterfalls stream down its walls.

Puzzle tip: the pebbly shore at the front and the sharp peaks at the back frame the picture; the water has a gradual change of colour.
