About Mud-Brick Towers of Shibam at Sunset

Shibam, in the Hadhramaut valley of eastern Yemen, is often called the "Manhattan of the Desert". Inside its wall stand about five hundred tower houses of mud brick, five to eleven storeys high, most of them built in the 16th century on the site of a much older town. The houses were built tall and close together on a raised mound to protect the town from floods and raiders. Their walls must be regularly replastered with fresh mud to survive the rain. Shibam has been a World Heritage Site since 1982.

Puzzle tip: the towers have many small windows that help to fit the pieces; the evening sky comes last.
