About Peaks of the Assekrem, Hoggar Mountains

The Hoggar, or Ahaggar, is a high volcanic massif in the heart of the Sahara, in southern Algeria, and the homeland of the Tuareg people. Its strangest landscapes are around the Assekrem plateau, at about 2,700 metres, where dark towers of old volcanic rock rise from the desert like giant organ pipes. In 1911 the French priest Charles de Foucauld built a small hermitage on the plateau, and visitors still climb there to watch the sunrise over the peaks. Nearby Mount Tahat, at about 2,900 metres, is the highest point in Algeria. In this photo rugged peaks and ridges stretch away under a pale sky.

Puzzle tip: the sharp peaks in the middle are the best start; the pale sky and the shadows take longer.
