About Giraffe Rock Engravings, Tadrart Rouge

The Tadrart Rouge, south-east of Djanet near the border with Libya, is a range of red sandstone cliffs and orange dunes, part of the Tassili n'Ajjer National Park. Thousands of years ago, when the Sahara was green and had lakes and grasslands, people living here carved and painted the animals they saw: giraffes, elephants, rhinos, antelopes and cattle. These engravings are among the oldest works of art in Africa and show how much the climate has changed since then. In this photo large giraffes and smaller animals are carved into a smooth, dark rock face.

Puzzle tip: follow the pale lines of the giraffes; the dark, even rock between them is the hardest part.
