About Sandstone Cliffs near Djanet

Djanet is an oasis town in the far south-east of Algeria and the gateway to the Tassili n'Ajjer, a vast sandstone plateau that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. Wind and water have carved its rock into canyons, arches and whole "forests" of stone pillars, and its shelters hold more than 15,000 prehistoric paintings and engravings. Each year the people of Djanet celebrate the Sebiba, a festival of drums, songs and dances that UNESCO lists as part of the world's intangible heritage. In this photo tall, layered sandstone walls rise above a sandy valley under a cloudy sky.

Puzzle tip: the sunlit rock faces are the place to start; the dark shadows and the sand come last.
