About Pico Cão Grande, São Tomé

Pico Cão Grande is a needle of volcanic rock that rises about 300 metres straight out of the rainforest in the south of São Tomé, to 663 metres above the sea. It is the hardened core of an old volcano, left standing after the softer rock around it wore away. Its smooth, almost vertical walls make it one of the most striking peaks in Africa and a hard challenge for climbers. It lies inside Obô Natural Park, which protects most of the island's forest. This photo shows the dark spire above the green jungle.

Puzzle tip: start with the dark rock spire, then the green forest and palms, and the cloudy sky last.
