About Rabaul and Simpson Harbour from the Volcano Observatory

The Rabaul Volcanological Observatory stands on a hill above the town and watches the volcanoes of the caldera day and night. Below it lies Simpson Harbour, the flooded heart of the caldera and one of the best natural harbours in the South Pacific. During the Second World War, Japan made Rabaul its main base in the region, with tens of thousands of soldiers and a network of tunnels in the hills. In this photo the rebuilt part of the town lies on the right, the old town destroyed by the 1994 eruption on the left, and the green cones beyond the bay.

Puzzle tip: start with the houses and the green trees in front, then the wide harbour and the hills across the water.
