About Lava Meeting the Ocean, Hawaiʻi

Kīlauea, on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. When its lava reaches the coast and pours into the ocean, it cools into new black rock, slowly making the island bigger. The meeting of lava and seawater throws up clouds of steam. The volcano is part of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Puzzle tip: the glowing lava is easy to spot; the dark rock and steam need patience.
