About Reef Pass in Chuuk Lagoon

Chuuk Lagoon, once known as Truk, is one of the largest lagoons in the world: a ring of coral reef about 60 kilometres across, with high volcanic islands inside it. This aerial view shows Mochun Fanananei Pass, one of the gaps in the outer reef where ships can enter, with low reef islets on either side. During the Second World War the lagoon was the main base of the Japanese navy in the central Pacific. Dozens of ships sunk in an American air attack in February 1944 still lie on its floor and draw divers from all over the world.

Puzzle tip: start with the white surf around the islets and the pale reef; the deep blue ocean is the hardest part.
