About Roman Theatre of Bosra

Bosra, in southern Syria, was the capital of the Roman province of Arabia, and its theatre, built in the 2nd century AD, is one of the best preserved in the Roman world. It is made of dark basalt and could seat about 15,000 people on its curving rows. It survived so well because, in the Middle Ages, the Ayyubids built a fortress around it, filling it and protecting it for centuries. The stage building behind still rises to its full height, with columns. Bosra has been a World Heritage Site since 1980.

Puzzle tip: the curved rows of seats make clear arcs to follow; the stage building behind has the most detail.
