About Route 66 Shield at Amboy, California

In the Mojave Desert at Amboy, California, the famous shield of Route 66 is painted right onto the tarmac, with the tall sign of Roy’s Motel and Café behind it, and travellers stop to take photos standing on it. The US highway shield was introduced in 1926, when the country first numbered its main roads. Route 66 was officially removed from the highway system in 1985, but its number lives on in signs like this.

Puzzle tip: the white shield and the road lines are the key; Roy’s sign and the motel come next.
