About Rust-Coloured Pool of Dallol, Ethiopia

Dallol lies in the Danakil Depression in north-eastern Ethiopia, more than 100 metres below sea level. Here three plates of the Earth's crust are slowly pulling apart, and hot water rises through thick layers of salt. When it reaches the air, the dissolved minerals harden into crusts of every colour. Iron turns rust-red and brown as it meets the oxygen in the air, while the fresh deposits around the springs glow yellow and green.

Puzzle tip: the dark red pool in the middle is the clearest shape; the yellow and green rim around it comes next.
