About Salt Towers of Dallol, Ethiopia

Not all of Dallol is bright green. Where the springs have died away, the ground turns orange and brown, and small towers and knobs of salt stand like a miniature city. The Danakil Depression is one of the hottest places on Earth: at Dallol the average temperature over the whole year is around 35 °C, and in summer it often rises well above 45 °C. Very little rain falls, so these delicate shapes can last for years.

Puzzle tip: the white patches in the background are easy to spot; the orange towers in front need patience, so use their shadows.
