About Split Waterfront from Above

Split, Croatia's second largest city, grew up inside a Roman palace. Around the year 305 the emperor Diocletian built a huge fortified residence on this bay to retire to, and in the Middle Ages the people of nearby Salona took refuge inside its walls and built their homes among the Roman halls. The emperor's mausoleum became the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, and its tall Romanesque bell tower still rises above the old town. In front of the palace runs the Riva, a seaside promenade lined with palms, cafés and boats. The palace has been a World Heritage Site since 1979.

Puzzle tip: start with the bell tower and the line of the waterfront; the boats come next and the sea and sky go last.
